Bangladesh
I arrived in Bangladesh on 27th September 2007, and since then I have been busy undergoing induction from VSOB before I could join my placement organization. I was out of Dhaka once from 19th to 21 st of October 2007 when I traveled with Gerald and another colleague from England to Rajsahi District north of the Country. The trip was an exposure visit that was organized by VSOB to give us an opportunity to visit our collegue at her placement and learn from her how she had been able to cope up with the situation and how she is going on with her placement and how we could draw lessons from that.
Visiting Rajsahi was a good opportunity for me as it gave me an understanding of the situation of Adivasi people in Bangladesh. Apparently in my own judgement, the life, experience and situations of the people I will be working with are just the same all over Bangladesh and there I suppose no much difference from Khagrachari District. the challenges of working with Adivasi people in Bangladesh looks the same and I think the visit was meaningful to us new volunteers in terms of introducing us to the rural community and life of Bangladesh in addition to a refreshing life out of the more congested, high pollution Dhaka city.
On the part of my stay so far in Bangladesh, I am convinced I will manage life here despite the challenge and am right to say that it has not been bad though sometimes boring as there is no much outings like it is in Uganda and most of my work has been basically induction activities that we are undergoing (ICT & B). However, there are many places to visit and enjoy food and tea rather than beers, pool game, soccer etc. In Bangladesh I am rediscovering myself more and more that is the good part of it.
Work time is as normal as in Uganda and not that different from the one in Uganda, a tipycal work time starts at 8:30 am and ends at 5:00 pm no different at all from our work schedules in Uganda. One thing which is different about work schedule is that, work here begins on Sunday and runs through Thursday - friday and saturday are week ends like saturday and sunday in Uganda.
I haven't been to my organization where I will be working and I plan to be there in a weeks time from now. I will be working as startegic planning and M&E advisor- the organization is not very old yet and is in the process of development according to information I have so far received from my colleagues and my PM. The organization is also one of the promising and growing NGO in Khagrachari District (The Chittagong Hill Track) South East of the Country. The organization main programme is on Indigenous community Rights of the Hill people.
